Royalton and PETRONAS Technology Ventures Collaborate to Validate Graphene-Enhanced Underwater Epoxy

Royalton Coatings Sdn Bhd is working in collaboration with PETRONAS Technology Ventures Sdn Bhd (PTVSB) to jointly validate and test a graphene-enhanced protective coating system designed for demanding industrial and marine environments.

This collaboration reflects the broader push to strengthen Malaysia’s industrial innovation capacity in areas that support critical national and regional assets, including energy infrastructure, ports and heavy industry.

According to Adrian Lim, Managing Director of Royalton Coatings Sdn Bhd, maintaining manufacturing controls in Malaysia allows the company to ensure consistent product quality, improve cost efficiency and better support operators throughout Southeast Asia.

Enhancing Corrosion Protection for Critical Industrial Assets

As industries continue to face challenges caused by corrosion in harsh operating environments, protective coating technologies play a critical role in extending asset lifespan and reducing maintenance disruption.

Under this collaboration, Royalton Coatings Sdn Bhd will enhance its ROYALPOXY UW 410 underwater epoxy coating system with ProShield+™, a graphene additive technology wholly owned by PETRONAS.

Designed to strengthen barrier protection within coating systems, ProShield+™ utilises graphene particles to create additional protective layers that help minimise the penetration of water, oxygen, salt and other corrosive elements. The technology is also intended to improve coating durability in aggressive operating conditions.

When integrated into ROYALPOXY UW 410, the enhanced coating system is being evaluated for its ability to:

  • Improve corrosion resistance
  • Reduce micro-cracking
  • Strengthen adhesion under immersion
  • Extend service life in long-term underwater exposure

These capabilities are especially relevant for assets exposed to seawater, humidity and chemically aggressive environments, including offshore platforms, jetty supports, pipelines, marine vessels and industrial facilities.

Designed for Wet, Oily and Submerged Conditions

ROYALPOXY UW 410 is specifically developed for marine and submerged maintenance applications. The coating can be applied directly onto wet or oily surfaces while curing underwater, enabling certain maintenance and repair activities to be carried out without removing structures from service.

This capability helps operators minimise operational downtime while maintaining asset integrity in challenging environments.

The coating system is currently used across offshore installations, pipelines, jetty supports and boat hulls, supporting maintenance work across tidal, splash and submerged zones.

Beyond marine and offshore applications, the graphene-enhanced system is also being evaluated for potential use in infrastructure and heavy industrial environments where corrosion protection and maintenance efficiency are critical operational priorities.

Supporting Broader Industrial Coating Innovation

This collaboration forms part of Royalton Coatings Sdn Bhd’s broader commitment to developing specialised protective coating solutions for the energy, marine, infrastructure and heavy industrial sectors.

In addition to underwater epoxy systems, the company’s portfolio includes:

  • Corrosion stabilisers
  • Moisture-cure urethane (MCU) systems
  • Floor coatings
  • Heat-resistant coatings

These solutions are designed to support different operational requirements across demanding industrial environments.
